Oakley SI Speed Jacket: the Flak Jacket in its military version, with three lenses

The Oakley SI Speed Jacket belongs to the Standard Issue (SI) line: the range Oakley builds for the armed forces, law enforcement and professionals, and one you will not usually see in a high-street optician. Its frame is that of the legendary Flak Jacket — squared, semi-rim and injected O Matter — a shape proven for years in sport and in the field.

What makes it special is not the frame but the pack: instead of a single lens it comes with three interchangeable lenses and its case. One pair for midday sun, one for shaded forest and one for indoors or night, without changing frames.

What the pack includes

• 1 frame SI Speed Jacket Matte Black, with the model code engraved (OO9228-05).
• 3 original interchangeable lenses: Prizm Tr22, Prizm Tr44 and Clear.
• 1 original case: zipped, with a stitched “Speed” label, padded, with slots for the frame and both pairs of lenses, lined in ballistic-series microfibre.
• 1 microfibre cloth from Centro Óptico Alpedrete.

Everything is factory-original: this is not a pack assembled from loose parts.

Three lenses for three situations

The number on each Prizm lens is the percentage of light it lets through, the quickest way to understand what each one is for:

All three carry Oakley’s UV protection; the two Prizm lenses also carry Prizm technology, which boosts contrast and clarity. Oakley describes the Tr22 as “the Prizm alternative to a standard grey lens”: the same job as a Prizm Road, but with no mirror at all, just like the Tr44.

Categories and polarisation: under European rules the fitted Clear lens is category 0 (clear) and the two Prizm lenses are category 2. This version is not polarised: in the model’s engraved code the letter N means “non-polarised” (P denotes the polarised versions).

The Clear lens comes fitted and the other two (Tr22 and Tr44) travel in their slots in the case, so the frame is ready to wear from day one.

Lens change in seconds: the lens releases with a small mechanism (one click); fitting it back needs no pressure and no tools. That is the difference from frames where you have to force the lens in with your hands.

The frame: discreet, light and extremely tough

Injected O Matter frame in matte black, low profile and free of logos: only the model code and name are engraved, exactly as you would expect on a service pair. Lens width 67 and 8.75 base curve, with a generous XXL size and a wraparound shape that also protects the sides. Nose pads are fixed rubber and the temples hold the frame steady without pressure.

It belongs to Oakley’s ballistic family, the brand’s highest impact resistance: this is not fashion eyewear, it is a protective tool.

High Bridge Fit: the fit Oakley gives this model at the factory, designed for a higher nose bridge. It is not a different frame: it is the same one with the support already sorted, and the fixed rubber nose pads keep it steady when you sweat.

It can be fitted with prescription lenses… and only here

Oakley does not offer official prescription for this frame: it is a Standard Issue product, outside the brand’s prescription programme. At Centro Óptico Alpedrete we do fit it, using our own workshop’s optical technology (over 20 years of experience, our own lab), equal or superior to the manufacturer’s, and with full freedom to choose the lens that suits you best.

Important, in plain words: the frame is the same and remains a ballistic-family frame with extremely high resistance, almost identical to the military version. But a prescription lens cannot be certified to the same impact standard as the factory lens, and we will not tell you otherwise. If your job requires that certification, use the frame with its original lenses; if what you want is a protective frame with your prescription, this is the way to go and it works beautifully.

In practice we can handle a good deal of prescription in this frame, both single vision and progressive, because we have several lens options to choose from. One caveat: as the lens is very large, with higher prescriptions the thickness grows almost exponentially towards the edge, so in those cases we recommend a higher lens index (and sometimes a polished edge) to keep the frame slim and light instead of bulky.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is included? One SI Speed Jacket Matte Black frame, three original lenses (Prizm Tr22, Tr44 and Clear), the original zipped case with the “Speed” label and the gift microfibre cloth.

Are all three lenses original Oakley? Yes: all three come from the factory with the frame and are marked by Oakley. This is not a pack built with loose lenses from other sources.

Which lens comes fitted? The Clear one is fitted at the factory; the Tr22 and Tr44 travel in their slots in the case.

Can it be fitted with prescription lenses? Yes, using our workshop’s technology, in single vision, progressive or photochromic. Oakley offers no official prescription in the SI line.

Does it keep the military impact certification if I add prescription lenses? No. The frame is the same and remains extremely tough, but a prescription lens cannot be certified to that standard.
